The Constructive Agility®

Leadership Development System

Conserve cash, yes. Increase productivity, yes. But then what?

Business is about out-innovating others. It’s about reacting quickly to change. It’s about preparing for the unexpected.

That’s agility. Real agility. Business agility.

It’s not Agile frameworks and other silver bullets sold to you by Agile consulting companies.

We have a better approach, and you don’t have to throw out your frameworks to use it. Our research revealed that agility results from three things, and all must be addressed: (1) knowledge of agility-promoting work patterns such as Lean and Flow, (2) behavior, in terms of how people react when things do not go as expected, and (3) the organization’s cultural expectations and norms with regard to the above.

Those are the things (not “Agile frameworks”) that drive companies like SpaceX, Amazon, and others to be as agile and effective as they are.

“A decentralized and empowered organization does not perform a symphony; it engages in a kind of improvisational jazz.”

– John Mackey, founder of Whole Foods Market

Yes, you had to drop everything to embrace AI. But do you think that’s the end of it?

Change is accelerating, and the companies that flourish will be those that are positioned for change.

A complete system:

— People learn what they need at their own pace. (Curriculum here)

— A supportive community (check it out here).

— Built-in assessment tools tell you in a dashboard what level of agility you actually are attaining.

We therefore created a system to help the people in organizations to learn, over time, all of these things, and to reinforce them.

It is a system for increasing people’s operational leadership skills and also their knowledge of agility-promoting work patterns. It’s based on behavioral psychology, leadership theory, cognitive science, and operations research. We call the learning journey Constructive Agility.

Why It Works

Agility and effectiveness are a result of behavior and knowledge. In the words of Dee Hock, the founder of VISA,

“Every … corporation president, has tried to distill the essence of [business] performance.  Countless others have tried to explain, and reduce to a mechanistic, measurably controlled process…It has never been done, and it never will be… It arises from the relationships and interaction of [people].”

— Dee Hock, the founder of VISA

Our system is designed to teach people how to be better leaders. We also teach important patterns from Lean, Theory of Constraints, and Operations Research – not just the patterns, but why they work, so that one can intelligently apply and tailor them.

Measurement Matters

We provide a dashboard, which shows the trends of results from occasional behavioral surveys. These focus on both leading behavioral indicators and trailing outcome-oriented behaviors. They tell you what your actual agility and effectiveness are.

How It Solves Your Problems

  • Your people will try things sooner, and more intelligently.

  • They will more effectively coordinate, plan, and execute.

  • They will better understand the capabilities of those who are different from them.

  • Forward progress will begin to replace politics – especially if senior leaders get involved and help to drive the changes that are taught.

  • Changes of direction will become more fluid and coordinated. Planning will be less brittle and rigid.

  • Costs will go down. Productivity will go up. Morale will increase. Time to market will decrease. Quality will increase. Learning will increase, through more proactive development of people and through more attention to learning.

  • More people will anticipate changes, instead of only reacting to them.
